Summer is long, and it rains, and there are afternoons in the middle of it with nothing planned. Unrolling a six foot coloring sheet on the floor buys a couple of quiet hours from a group of children. The sheet is not fussy about where it goes: floor, table, patio or a wall, whichever surface happens to be free at the time.

Ice Cream Party Table

An ice cream party makes a mess in a way other parties do not, since everything on the table is melting from the moment it comes out. The sheet takes the drips and the sprinkles while it is being colored, so the table under it stays dry. Bowls and cones can sit straight on the finished drawing, and it goes in the bin with the mess inside.

Floor, Table or Grass

Where it goes is decided by the day. Spread on the floor it becomes an indoor project for a wet afternoon; on the table it works as a paper cloth; outside it does duty as a picnic sheet under lunch in the garden. Laid over furniture it keeps dust off during a repaint. Few craft supplies move around a house that easily.

Break From the Screen

School holidays go quickly to devices, and an activity has to last more than ten minutes to be worth setting up at all. Six feet of drawing does. Several children work on it at once, come back to it after lunch, and add to the same sheet over two or three days rather than finishing and asking what happens next.

A Gift That Travels

Rolled and tied, the sheet packs down small enough to go in a bag as a present for a birthday, the end of term or a visit to grandparents. It suits adults who draw as well as children, and it is a reasonable thing to bring to a party where a gift is expected and nobody knows what the child already owns.
