February 14 in a classroom is mostly logistics: cards to hand out, envelopes to open, sugar in the room by ten in the morning. A single coloring sheet of 30 by 72 inches gives the group one thing to do together in the middle of that. Thick paper takes crayon, marker and paint, and the table underneath survives the frosting.

Card Exchange Day

The sheet works as the surface for the exchange itself. Boxes and envelopes sit on it, the drawing carries on around them, and anything that gets spilled lands on paper rather than on a desk. Children who finish opening their cards early have somewhere to go instead of circling the room, which is the part of the party that usually needs solving.

Hearts Across Six Feet

Six feet of length means eight or nine children can work at the same time, each with a patch of their own. Nobody waits for a page and there is no argument over who colors what. Groups tend to divide the sheet up between themselves within a minute of it being unrolled, then trade colors back and forth along the length of the table.

Paint Without Bleed

Thin paper fails at exactly the wrong moment, when a child loads a brush and the color runs through onto the desk. This paper is heavy, sharply printed and reluctant to tear, so it holds up under water color, marker and a full afternoon of handling. Colors stay where they were put rather than washing out by the end of the day.

Ages Two to Twelve

The artwork is drawn at several scales, which is how one sheet covers a wide age range. Toddlers of two or three fill the largest shapes, children of four to eight work the middle detail, and eight to twelve year olds take the fine areas or add drawings of their own in the empty space. A mixed age group stays on the same project.
