Serape stripes are the shortcut to a fiesta: put them on the table and the rest of the decorating is optional. Two covers come in the pack, 52 by 87 inches each, which suits an eight-foot table and the eight to ten people crowded around it. The plastic is thick enough to wipe rather than tear, so a taco bar can run all evening on the same cover.

Woven-Look Serape Stripes

The print copies the banded look of a serape blanket, with stripes in the reds, greens, blues and yellows that run through Mexican textiles. It gives a plain folding table a pattern strong enough that paper plates and a stack of napkins do not look bare on top of it. Photographs taken over the food come out with color in the frame rather than white plastic.

Under The Taco Bar

A taco bar is a wet job: salsa, lime, sour cream, a pot of beans that drips down the side. Thick plastic keeps all of it off the table underneath, and the surface takes a wipe with a damp cloth partway through the evening without going soft or tearing. Serving bowls slide along it easily when the line backs up and somebody has to shift things down.

Wiped Down And Folded

Unlike thinner covers, this one does not have to be thrown out at the end. Wipe it down, let it dry over the back of a chair, fold it and it goes back in the cupboard for the next gathering. That matters in a household where taco night happens more than once a year. Folded, the cover takes up about as much room as a dish towel.

Day Of The Dead

The same stripes work well past the fifth of May. They cover the table for a birthday with a Mexican theme, a Day of the Dead gathering, a summer picnic or a backyard dinner with no theme at all. Hung on a wall or a fence, one of the pair becomes a backdrop; laid flat on grass, it makes a spot for children to eat away from the adults.
