October and November want different tables, and this one handles the second. The cover is plastic, rectangular, cream with orange, printed with a pilgrim turkey badge that reads HAPPY THANKSGIVING DAY and maple leaves scattered around it. An orange band runs down the center like a runner, so the cloth arrives with its centerpiece area already marked out. The Halloween cover is the other choice.

A Pilgrim Turkey Badge

The artwork is centered on one badge: a turkey in a pilgrim hat with HAPPY THANKSGIVING DAY around it, the kind of drawing that has been on November tables for decades. Maple leaves fall across the rest of the cover in the same warm tones. Nothing about it is ironic, which is usually what a family dinner wants.

Printed Band, No Runner

The printed band does the job of a runner without a second piece of cloth. Candles, a bowl of gourds or the turkey platter go along it and the arrangement looks deliberate rather than pushed into the middle. Place settings land on the cream either side, where the leaves are sparse and a plate is not covering the design.

Gravy Stays On Top

Thanksgiving is the meal that tests a table: gravy, cranberry, wine, a hot dish set down without a trivet. Plastic keeps all of it on the surface where a napkin reaches it, and the table underneath comes through the afternoon dry. Clearing up at the end is lifting the cover with the worst of it folded inside.

The Kids Table Too

A long dinner usually runs to two tables, and the second one is where the children eat. Covering both in the same print keeps the room looking like one meal rather than an overflow. On a folding table in the next room the cover also hides a surface that has nothing to do with dining the rest of the year.
