4600 Heishi Beads
The bulk of the box is flat polymer clay discs, 6 millimeters across with a 2 millimeter hole, which is the shape that stacks into the striped patterns children copy from each other. A hole that size takes elastic cord doubled back through it, so a finished bracelet holds. The clay is soft to the touch, waterproof and skin friendly, and colors do not run when a bracelet stays on through a shower.
Six Alphabet Sets
Letters are what turn beads into a message, and running out mid-word ends the project. Six full alphabets plus 48 extra vowels cover names, inside jokes, song titles and the lyric bracelets traded at concerts. Two or three children can work at the same table without negotiating over a single letter E. Charms, spacers and clasps fill out the rest of the tray, so a bracelet can be finished rather than left as a loop of loose beads.
Ages Three Up
The beads are suitable from age three, though the steady work of threading a 2 millimeter hole tends to suit six and older. Younger children usually want an adult to knot the ends. Scissors and tweezers come in the box, which spares the kitchen drawer, and the tweezers do most of the work when a bead has to come off a cord that is already half strung.
Not Only Bracelets
The same beads and cord make necklaces, anklets, keychains and phone charms, so the kit does not end when everyone has a wrist full. Rainy afternoons, sleepovers, a quiet hour at a birthday party and Easter baskets all absorb it. Left out on a table it competes reasonably well with a screen, and the finished pieces get given away, which is usually why the next session starts.
